Roulette’s Outside Bets

The roulette table has two distinct betting areas. The outside betting area allows you to place bets that aren’t based solely on the numbers on the wheel, for example it includes boxes for red or black, odd or even and different groupings of numbers.

You can make a simple bet on red or black, which pays out at evens. Remember though that the zero and double zero are green, so if you have bet on red or black and the ball lands on green you will still lose your wager. You cannot bet on green as a colour, but on the inside of the table you can bet on both zero and double zero if you wish.

You can also make a bet on whether the number the ball lands on will be odd or even. Again, this bet pays out at evens although the zero and double zero do not count as either odd or even and so you will lose your wager if the ball lands on one of them.

You can place a low bet on the numbers 1 to 18 by placing a chip on the corresponding box. If the ball lands on any of these numbers, you will be paid out at evens. You lose if the ball lands on the numbers 19 to 36, or on either the zero or double zero.

Corresponding with the low bet, you can place a high bet on the numbers 19 to 36 that also pays out at evens. If the ball lands on the numbers between 1 and 18 or on the zero or double zero, you lose.
A first dozen bet is a wager that the ball will land on any of the first 12 consecutive numbers, from 1 all the way up to 12. This bet pays out at 2 to 1. There is also a bet for the second dozen that pays out at the same rate for numbers 13 to 24, and for the third dozen from 25 to 36.

There is one other kind of bet you can place on 12 numbers at once, but these are not consecutive although they pay out at the same odds of 2 to 1. If you place a chip at the bottom of any of the three vertical columns, you can wager on all the numbers in that column at once.
